Always a special game when two rivals meet for a Derby, ratiopharm Ulm and EnBW Ludwigsburg Hosting a 'Derby game' for the first time of the season, Saturday night will be the next sell-out crowd at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm.  Part of the enthusiastic and supportive Ulm crowd will be Oberburgermeister Ivo Gonner along with other prominant Ulm politicians.  The visit from Ulm's Oberburgermeister Gonner marks the second visit for an Ulm basketball game and first since the team moved back into the Bundesliga four seasons ago.  Gonner and the Politicians were very influential in the vote for Ulm's new Arena which passed the vote earlier in the season.  With the tremendous fan support and home court advantage of Sportszentrum Kuhberg, ratiopharm Ulm is focused for their first Derby win of the 2009-2010 Beko Bundesliga season.

ratiopharm Ulm post man John Bryant

Ludwigsburg's 2009-2010 team features tremendous talent, athleticism, depth and experience.  Led by Bundesliga All Star Mike King, a skilled scoring guard who has a complete offensive game, Ludwigsburg's offensive attack boasts a plethora of weapons.  This season, King has produced 11.2ppg 2.5reb and hit 38% from three as a primary scorer for Tolga Ongoran's attack.  In the post, skilled center Kyle Visser has been strong for Ludwigsburg scoring 11ppg while grabbing 5.4reb and veteran power forward Quadre Lollis has contributed 8.3ppg 5reb.  Post man Rashaun Freeman has returned from injury adding athleticism along with 4.1ppg 2.5reb as a role player in the frontcourt.  As a skilled 4 man, Michael Haynes is another scorer for Ludwigsburg producing 11.4ppg 3.2reb 38% from three.  Haynes gave Ulm 32 points in Sportszentrum Kuhberg last season while playing with Tubingen and has led the Ludwigsburg team in scoring the last two games.  Athletic wing Richard Chaney is an underrated player and an active cutter that has given his team 7.1ppg 4.9reb and 33% from three.  Experienced combo guard Domonic Jones has also been a terrific player for Ludwigsburg on both ends of the floor producing 9.1ppg 2reb and 36% from three.  Young point guard David McCray is enjoying his best season in the Bundesliga and has stepped into a nice role within the Ludwigsburg team.  While Ludwigsburg recently released former Ulm guard Kyle Bailey, the team added skilled scoring guard TJ Thompson who has established himself well in his first four games.  A former teammate with Mike King at George Washington University in Washington DC, Thompson has scored 13ppg with 3.8ast and 37% from three.  Rounding out the Ludwigsburg roster is physical and athletic forward Marco Sanders and talented young big man Philipp Heyden.

This season Ludwigsburg has shown talent and potential to be among the top teams in the Bundesliga.  After a slow 1-3 start, Ludwigsburg ran off six straight wins as they were the hottest team in the league throughout much of the early season.  But a stretch where the team lost 7 of 8 games followed and Ludwigsburg locked into a fight for playoff position.  Recently, the team has picked up their play winning four of their last five games including a home Derby win over rival Walter Tigers Tubingen 82-70 last Sunday at Ludwigsburg Arena.

Over the last few seasons, ratiopharm Ulm and EnBW Ludwigsburg have locked up for some great games.  The two teams have split six regular season games over the last three seasons with home-teams winning every time.
