HUMPHREY'S HOT HAND!

ratiopharm Ulm captain Lee Humphrey hit a Bundesliga record 8 of 10 three pointers igniting his team to an exciting 101-88 home win over Gottingen Violets Saturday night at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm.  Lee's fantastic 24 point shooting display was part of an Ulm offensive effort that hit 54% from the floor, 11 of 25 threes (44%), 22 of 25 free throws (88%) and dished out 17 assists.  Along with Lee's hot hand, Ulm power forward Christian Burns hit 11 of 19 shots to topscore with a season best 26 points in the win.

Saturday nights game was speciall for ratiopharm Ulm guard Rocky Trice as he faced his former Gottingen team for the first time.  A key part of the Violets successful playoff run last season, Rocky enjoyed seeing his former teammates and coaches during pre-game.  Putting pre-game pleasantries aside, Rocky was ready.

Focused to build on their road win in Bremerhaven, ratiopharm Ulm entered Saturday's home game against Gottingen with a focus for simple, strong plays against the Violets aggressive defensive pressure.  Aiming to attack the Gottingen defense with teamwork, Ulm's hardwork on the practice court paid off.  Ulm captain Lee Humphrey took a leading role in the game and the result was his hot hand from beyond the arc.

At tip off, the game took an immediate uptempo pace.  Gottingen jumped to an early 11-5 lead, but a quick 6-0 Ulm run sparked by rookie forward Robin Benzing evened the scoreboard at 11 five minutes into the game.  Both teams found their offensive rhythm early and attacked aggressively.  While Ulm's Lee Humphrey was hot from behind the three point line, the Gottingen post players finished strong moves in the lane. A key part to the first quarter was the bench play from Ulm.  As post man Coleman Collins fell victim to foul trouble, Ulm's backup big man John Bryant entered the game with immediate positive impact.  While John energized Ulm inside, rookie point guard Kevin Kanaskie sparked Ulm on the perimeter.  With the game tied at 15, Ulm edged ahead 20-16 before Gottingen took a 22-20 lead into the first quarter break.

Quarter two opened with an 8-0 Ulm burst.  Ulm's teamwork against the Gottingen defense made the difference.  As the Violets trapped ballscreens and doubled the post, Ulm quickly moved the basketball to break down the defense.  With plays like Rocky Trice penetrating and pitching to Lee Humphrey spotting up, the 'Lee for Three' cheers errupted from the Sportszentrum Kuhberg crowd.  Drilling 6 of 7 threes in the first half, Humphrey's hot hand caught fire.  Ulm built a 41-33 lead and took a 48-40 advantage into the half.

At the half, Ulm had hit 52% of their shots including 7 of 15 threes (47%) and 7 of 8 free throws (88%) while outrebounding Gottingen 16-13 in the first twenty minutes.  With a game best 18 points at the break, Lee Humphrey's sizzing 6 for 7 three point marksmanship in the first half sparked Ulm to their lead.  Ulm had handled the Gottingen defensive pressure well to the mid-point of the game and attacked the Violets defense with quality teamwork.

As the second half opened, Gottingen battled back with a strong run of their own.  Rookie guard Chester Frazier sparked the Violets with important plays.  Cutting into Ulm's lead, Gottingen trimmed the gap to 51-49.  Ulm called for time.  Lee Humphrey sank his seventh three of the game and power forward Christian Burns began to get hot.  Building a 57-52 advantage, Ulm held a 76-68 lead after three.

In the fourth, Gottingen made another run behind an active Chris Oliver.  The Violets pulled within a basket cutting Ulm's lead to two 78-76.  Ulm used their second timeout of the second half.  Out of the timeout, Ulm extended their advantage to nine 85-76 with five minutes to play.  Christian Burns scored 11 of his season best 26 points down the stretch powering Ulm's offense in the fourth.  Leading 88-81, Ulm outscored Gottingen 13-7 in the final minutes to break the game open.  Rocky Trice made two highlight plays finishing a drive with an emphatic slam before athletically blocking a corner three, collecting the ball in the air and throwing it off the Gottingen player out of bounds.  The hustle plays brought Sportszentrum Kuhberg to its feet.  Sealing the win, Ulm's Robin Benzing fired a full-court inbound pass to a wide-open Christian Burns behind the Gottingen defense feeding the power forward for a breakaway slam.  At the final buzzer, ratiopharm Ulm earned their second straight win with a 101-88 victory.

ratiopharm Ulm was led by Christian Burns' season best 26 point performance and Lee Humphrey's record-setting three point accuracy which totaled 24.  Robin Benzing and Rocky Trice added 11 points apiece while Per Gunther and Kevin Kanaskie chipped in 7 points apiece.   John Bryant hit 3 of 3 shots and 3 of 4 free throws to score 9 points in the win.  As a team, Ulm shot 55% from the floor hitting 11 of 25 threes (44%) and 22 of 25 free throws (88%) while dishing out 17 assists and outrebounding Gottingen 30-29.  Playing against the Gottingen pressure, Ulm did a solid job taking care of the basketball with only 14 turnovers.  Meanwhile, Gottingen was led by Chris Oliver's 22 points along with 15 points from Chester Frazier and 14 points from Taylor Rochestie.

After the game, Ulm fans and players celebrated their second consecutive win.  A terrific team performance, the exciting win came at the pefect time as the cities of Ulm and Neu-Ulm will vote for the new Arena Wednesday November 11th.  As Ulm financial manager Andreas Oettel entertained a group of politicians throughout the game, German National team head coach Dirk Bauermann also addressed the Sportszentrum Kuhberg crowd with his support for the new Arena project in Ulm.  As Coach Bauermann commented, "Ulm is an enormously important location for German basketball.  Ulm has basketball tradition. Over the last several seasons, much good work has been done for young German players.  Ulm needs the new Arena. That would be an extremely important step for Ulm and for basketball in Germany."
