ULM OUTDUELS TV LICH 96-81
ratiopharm Ulm improved to 2-0 in 2.Bundesliga South basketball action with a 96-81 road win at TV Lich Saturday night just north of Frankfurt, Germany. Ulm used a strong team effort and excellent second and third quarters to outduel the TV Lich American combination of center Ryan DeMichael and wing Nigel Moore which spearhead the much improved Lich attack. DeMichael was almost unstoppable on the evening finishing his memorable performance with a game high 40 points and 10 rebounds. Ulm started fast running out to a 13-9 lead behind inside plays from Maksym Shtein and Niki Arinze. Ulm defense established itself and Michael Bree helped the orange and black Ulmers set the tempo. As expected, the hungry Lich team fought back. DeMichael scored inside before drilling a deep three from the right wing in transition pushing the home team ahead by one 16-15. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter as DeMichael and Moore carried the fired up Lich team to a 25-22 lead after one.

Quarter break adjustments helped re-direct Ulm's energy. Even with Emeka Erege handcuffed with two fouls, Ulm roared back in quarter 2. Forward Niki Arinze made his presence felt finishing plays in the paint, hitting a beautiful turnaround MJ fadeaway and getting to the foul line. Ulm's running game resulted in open court chances but several missed finishes kept the game close. Christian Grosse subbed in and sparked the team running the show and sinking two threes in the ratiopharm run. Ulm defense settled in and registered consistent defensive stops resulting in a 22-11 second quarter. At the half, Ulm maintained a 44-36 lead. Focusing to build on the lead and put the game away immediately, Ulm players controlled the third quarter as well. Emeka Erege scored several easy baskets on backdoor cuts, transition lay ins and offensive finishes around the rim. Point guard Michael Bree piloted the teams transition game and also buried two momentum building three point shots. Mike T's men widened the lead to fifteen, 64-49.

In command, Ulm rotated the bench beginning the fourth. The fiesty Lich team never gave in. Big baskets from Moore (a top of the key three) and DeMichael's consistent barrage of baskets, inspired Lich playing in front of their home fans for the first time. Ulm defenders let concentration slide allowing several offensive rebounds and easy inside scores for the Lich center. The lead was never in jeopardy as the cushion stayed at 10 before bulging to 15 on a late Peter Heizer three. Playing with tremendous intensity and teamwork, TV Lich has found renewed energy under new head coach Dejan Kostic. Without question, this team has improved tremendously over the offseason and will surprise people with their progress this season.

Taylorhoops.com Player of the Game, Niki Arinze, finished with a team high 20 points with 5 boards. Emeka Erege tallied 13 second half points to finish with 15 with 3 steals while Peter Heizer and Maksym Shtein added 14 points apiece in the win. Shtein led the team in rebounding with 8. Ulm point guard Michael Bree was also solid in the win finishing with 10 points and 4 assists. Erege, Heizer and Bree also played quality defense. From the bench, Christian Grosse played well adding 8 points and 2 assists while Florian Mobius likely was the most effective defender in his time on DeMichael. Despite rotating defenders in an attempt to stop the versatile center, Ulm had little success stopping DeMichael who drilled threes, scored in the paint, crashed the offensive boards and dribble penetrated past a variety of Ulmer big men. What made the performance even more impressive was the fact that Ulm game planned specifically to stop the quality American duo of DeMichael and Moore --- the events simply demonstrate how much difference two Americans means to the 2.Bundesliga. Respect and recognition out to DeMichael's excellent performance against Ulm. ratiopharm Ulm returns to action Saturday at 7pm when the team hosts Kaiserslautern at Sportszentrum Kuhberg.
